San Fran / Photos Week 2

Guys! It’s a miracle! I recovered! I didn’t post at all last week because I spent the whole week sleeping and working, which seems to have helped my cause because I’m finally showing no signs of illness. But, before I recovered (like, at the peak of my misery) I went to San Francisco. I was exhausted and had no appetite the whole time we were there, but I’m so glad I went! We went on a tour around the Bay (under the Golden Gate Bridge and around Alcatraz), walked around Fisherman’s Wharf, explored their super sweet aquarium, rode cable cars, etc. Here is a slideshow of some random, unedited (read: crooked) photos I took.

Photo Challenge: Week 1

So last month, I put together a photo challenge for myself in an effort to branch out and photograph some new subjects (here in case you missed it). And then I got the plague and have been in bed ever since. Yep, I’m ringing in 2017 with a wonderful case of strep throat. The only photographing I’ve done has been a required shoot that I’ve committed to with the music publication I started working with. So, without further ado, here are this week’s photos from my shoot at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard.

hsh_3697hsh_3699hsh_3700hsh_3752hsh_3754hsh_3802ll_3302ll_3334ll_3343-2ll_3343ll_3413ll_3456ll_3465ll_3473mojo_3862mojo_3905mojo_3931mojo_3998mojo_4055mojo_4056mojo_4077mojo_4105mojo_4138

It was a totally packed show and I had absolutely no room to move around the stage so I was actually really disappointed with how these turned out– there’s always something obstructing the musicians’ faces/bodies, the angles were weird, etc. It definitely didn’t help that I compared my photos to other photographers’ pictures at this venue and wow they were all so amazing! I ended up getting really positive feedback on my composition skills from my boss (who knew firsthand how packed it was). My fam and boyfriend had good things to say too, so that was encouraging.

I was actually supposed to do another shoot at the Tractor tonight–I’ve been sick for about a week but I really thought it was just a cold until yesterday–and have kind of been dreading going out in public all day. About two hours ago, I got a notification that the show was cancelled because the band got stuck in the Portland snow storm. You guys. I have a guardian angel.

Up next: I’m going to San Francisco this weekend so I’ll be uploading photos from my trip next week, and I have another music shoot at Conor Byrne on the 21st. I’ll also actually start participating in my own photo challenge next week 😉

16 Things I Learned in ’16

  1. Not everyone in life is your competition. You can be happy for other people’s success even if you’re not progressing as fast as you want–and even when other peoples’ successes are in something you have no interest in.
    • …and realizing this is the biggest relief of your life. Ever.
  2. Life is easier when you let go of people who bring nothing but stress into your life.
    • …But some people are worth a little stress.
  3. Hobbies are necessary.
  4. Everyone should travel alone.
  5. Everyone should have a roommate at one point in time.
  6. Everyone should then live alone at one point in time.
  7. Indian food is really good but Thai food is still better.
  8. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you take a step forward
  9. If you are going to go somewhere, be present in your time there. Whether this means getting enough sleep in order to engage with the people you’ll be around (I cannot engage with people in a social setting on any less than 7 hours of sleep), or staying off your phone around them (please. seriously).
  10. Being thankful is the best way to feel better.
  11. Running sucks and shin splints are actually kind of serious.
  12. Compassion, when only shown to those just like us, is not compassion,  but self-interest.
  13. Persistence always pays off.
  14. Life is easier and more enjoyable if you can genuinely apologize–even if you don’t think you’re wrong.
  15. The electoral college seriously sucks.
  16. Learning to function and be content when you’re alone is so amazingly necessary.

The One Weight Loss Secret That Will Change Your Life

So last Wednesday I came to a terrifying realization: I have legitimately gained 20 pounds in a year. Now, granted, this time last year I was actively dieting and had probably lost about 7 pounds in three months. But I have now gained all of them back and then some. I’ve gained 10 of those 20 pounds in the past 3 months because I’ve moved back into my parents’ house and can’t say, “no,” to the Oreos that are forever present in our pantry, or to a second (and third. Sometimes fourth, on sloppy joe night) helping of dinner. I also know that, though I try really hard to workout regularly, I’m not working out effectively, and that doing 3 sets of 21’s with the lightest barbell and 30 minutes on the stationary bike, while it’s better than nothing, is not actually anything that will ensure positive physical results (though even that much improves my sleep quality!).

So, when I came to the realization that I’m a mess and I need to stop eating cup noodle for breakfast and pizza for lunch (judge me), I went on a frantic “how to lose 20 pounds in 3 months with minimal changes to horrible eating habits and  little-to-no additional physical activity,” internet-searching-spree. The results of my internet hunt will follow, but first, more about me O:)

Here’s how I diet: I decide I’m going to do (insert very restrictive diet here). I set a date–let’s say the next Monday, or the first of the new month. And then, about half way into the first day, I really want a cookie. So I go buy a cookie. And then I decide that my whole first day is ruined and I might as well just eat what I want for the rest of the day and start over tomorrow. And then that goes on for several days until I realize that I have some kind of function coming up (a friend’s birthday, a vacation, etc.) and then I tell myself I’ll start again after (insert event). Basically there is always a new excuse to put off bettering my eating habits, and it all starts with me deciding that one cookie a day ruins my whole process. So here it is:

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THIS WORLD, FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE!

The word, “cheat,” should never be used in relation to a diet. You do not cheat on your diet. Cheating means you’re doing something bad or morally wrong, and that you have something to be guilty over. If eating a cookie is bad…That’s just ridiculous and sad and not a life that anyone should feel the need to live. Having a treat isn’t bad, so stop telling yourself it is.

Instead of letting one treat ruin your whole plan, how about you keep track of all of the great decisions you made throughout the day in the notepad on your phone (or wherever). For instance, mine looked like this on December 15:

weight

Did I get up and go get one of those tasty Grandma’s chocolate brownie cookies and some milk from the cafeteria that afternoon? Yep. But will focusing on that inspire me to continue to better my eating/physical activity habits? Nope. So, it happened, I’m glad it did because yum, but I’m not looking at it as a bad thing, nor am I going to sabotage my end goal because of it.

So, what do you guys think? Have you tried to focus more on the positive than negative in relation to your eating habits? Has it made more of a difference than placing the importance on the bad?

2017 Weekly Photo Challenge

Can you even believe how quickly 2016 is coming to an end? We are HALF WAY THROUGH DECEMBER I’ve been looking into a photo challenge to do in 2017 and I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to do a weekly challenge or a daily one. I’m very good at believing that I can do waaaayyyy more than I can comfortably commit myself to, so I decided to take a step back, not overwhelm myself, and take up a weekly photography challenge. I found some great ones but all of them included a handful of themes that I was less than excited for, so I decided to prepare my own tentative “schedule.” I’m going to do all of the themes listed below, just possibly not in the order indicated below (except the ones that are bolded. Those, for one reason or another, are all going to be done during the weeks indicated below). Do you see any really fun ones that I’m missing? Even with this, there are a couple of themes that I’m not totally stoked on, so if anyone has more ideas, I’d love some backups to potentially swap out the boring ideas 🙂

I’ll be doing self portraits 1/1/16-1/7/16 and Winter-y shots 1/8/16-1/14/16. I’ll post my pictures at the beginning of the new week and I’ll also include what my theme for the following week will be. Please please feel free to copy my schedule and follow along with me!
